Arthrosamid Cost and Availability

Arthrosamid® is available at our Newcastle clinic at a cost of £2,400.

Arthrosamid® is an injectable hydrogel treatment for knee osteoarthritis, acting as a long-acting scaffold within the joint. It is not absorbed by the body and is not a cure for osteoarthritis. Individual response varies depending on factors including disease severity, joint stability, and overall health.

Suitability requires careful clinical assessment. We offer a free initial telephone consultation to discuss your symptoms and previous treatments, and to explore whether Arthrosamid or another injectable option may be appropriate. No treatment is offered without a full clinical assessment and shared decision-making.

    What is Arthrosamid?

Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable polyacrylamide hydrogel, classified as an injectable knee implant rather than a conventional medication. After injection, it integrates with the synovial tissue lining the joint, forming a long-acting scaffold that may help modify joint mechanics and reduce inflammation-related symptoms.

Unlike steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, Arthrosamid is not absorbed by the body and is intended to remain within the joint long-term.

    Is Arthrosamid Suitable for Me?

Arthrosamid is designed for patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis who have not achieved adequate relief from conservative treatments such as physiotherapy, weight management, or conventional injections. It is not appropriate for all presentations, and careful clinical assessment — including review of imaging — is required before any treatment decision is made. At your consultation, we will discuss whether Arthrosamid or an alternative injectable option is most appropriate for your joint.

    What Happens During Arthrosamid Treatment?

Arthrosamid® is a relatively new treatment and the clinical evidence base is still developing. Published studies suggest that some patients experience meaningful improvements in pain and function, though results vary depending on patient selection and disease severity. Arthrosamid has demonstrated a favourable safety profile in published studies, with some observational data reporting sustained benefit during longer-term follow-up. Ongoing clinical trials continue to assess comparative effectiveness and longer-term outcomes.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Arthrosamid® knee injections in Newcastle.

Is Arthrosamid Suitable for Everyone with Knee Arthritis?

No. Arthrosamid is not suitable for all patients with knee osteoarthritis. Suitability depends on factors such as the severity and pattern of arthritis, joint stability, presence of inflammation, previous treatments, and overall health. A face-to-face clinical assessment and review of imaging are required before any treatment decision is made.

Do I Need Imaging Before an Arthrosamid Injection?

Yes. Imaging (X-ray and/or MRI) is required to assess the severity and pattern of arthritis and to determine whether Arthrosamid is an appropriate option. If you do not already have recent imaging, this can be arranged following your consultation where clinically indicated.

This is particularly important because Arthrosamid is a long-acting, non-biodegradable implant.

What Happens During the Consultation Process?

We offer a free initial telephone consultation to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and previous treatments. If Arthrosamid appears potentially suitable, this is followed by a paid face-to-face consultation and examination, including review of imaging. Treatment is only offered after this assessment and shared decision-making.

How Much Does Arthrosamid Cost?

The cost of an Arthrosamid injection is £2400. Consultation and imaging costs are separate and are discussed in advance. We aim to be transparent about all fees before any treatment decision is made.

How Long Does Arthrosamid Last?

Some patients experience symptom improvement for months or years following treatment, while others may notice less benefit. Duration of effect varies between individuals, and long-term outcomes are still being studied. Arthrosamid does not cure arthritis and does not stop disease progression. We are happy to discuss current research at your consultation.

Can Arthrosamid Help Me Avoid Knee Replacement Surgery?

Arthrosamid does not replace knee replacement surgery. In selected patients, it may help manage symptoms and delay surgery, but it cannot reverse arthritis or guarantee that surgery will not be required in the future.

Is Arthrosamid Permanent?

Yes. Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable hydrogel and remains within the knee joint long-term. This is discussed in detail during consultation, including how it may affect future treatment options.

What Are the Risks of Arthrosamid?

Most patients tolerate Arthrosamid well, but as with any joint injection, risks include pain, swelling, stiffness, inflammatory flare, and a small risk of infection. Because Arthrosamid is non-biodegradable, managing complications can be more complex than with temporary injections. All risks are discussed during consultation.

What if Arthrosamid Doesn’t Work for Me?

Response to Arthrosamid varies. If it does not provide meaningful symptom relief, other treatment options can still be considered. In some cases, surgery may be appropriate, although this is usually delayed for a period following injection.

Are There Alternative Treatments Available?

Yes. We offer a range of injectable treatments for knee osteoarthritis, including corticosteroid injections, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). During your consultation, we will discuss which options may be appropriate based on your symptoms, imaging, and treatment goals.

Can I Book an Arthrosamid Injection Directly?

No. Arthrosamid injections are not booked without prior assessment. All patients must undergo consultation and imaging review to confirm suitability before treatment is offered.
